Whatcha gonna do

"No, no I'm not reading it," Shelly practically snapped. She would not even open the book. No way was she going to sit around pondering over WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING. She glared at Mia. How could she?

"Well, it's trending, luv, from what I hear." Mia winced as if Shelly needed a bit more convincing. They were alone at the little sitting table near the window at the book shop. Of course, no one around to hear their fierce discussion over Where the Crawdads Sing. "They even made a movie. It would be lovely to have a discussion about it at the shop, wouldn't it?"

Shelly practically gnashed her teeth as she glared at Mia. She wanted to growl, "How dare you, you didn't tell me you were Miles!" But instead Shelly did her best to express her feelings about this damn book. "Librarians from around the world hate this book. It's a stupid arse story!" Her frown might be small and full circle, but really Shelly had a lot on her mind.

"Are you sure?" Naturally, Mia did not believe her.

"Look, I did my best to get through the first chapter and it was like, "Lordy, I am sooooo poor living in the swamp." She did her best southern accent. Afterward, Shelly rolled her eyes. "How can any of this be true? Really?"

Mia pressed her lips in thought. She was starting to get a nervous shake in her crossed leg. She was a bit more casual than usual, but always her chic self.

"And when I saw the preview on the telly, I was bursting into laughter!"

"But it's really a good book pick. We need to really try to sell it," Mia did have a point as she turned to the huge stack next to Shelly's feet.

"I don't know why they sent this to me, anyway," Shelly hugged herself hard.

"Look, I will do the discussion. We need to move these babies." Mia looked at her blankly. "We need some hype."

"Hype?" Shelly looked at her as if it was a lost cause.

"Oh, Shelly, just leave it to me," Mia promised she'd get these WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING out of the store.

Shelly looked at Mia thinking she'd never confess anything. Life would just go on.

  1. This is fun. I love stories in bookshops. Why don't I have a bookshop lol? Anyway... love the little Marlboro box. And the title made me think of an old PAblo Cruise song. My brain goes weird places... :):)

  2. Oh, this is funny! I too was very against reading Where the Crawdads Sing. Then I saw the movie trailer and then someone leant me the book, and long story not-so-short, it's now on deck after I finish rereading a favorite mystery. Way to strike the zeitgeist, Ellie!

Not to bury the lede, but I was interested to learn that Shelly knows about Mia! "Shelly practically gnashed her teeth as she glared at Mia. She wanted to growl, "How dare you, you didn't tell me you were Miles!" But instead Shelly did her best to express her feelings about this damn book." Did Stu tell her? Or did she find out some other way? Guess I'll have to wait and see! That and if those Crawdad books sell, ha ha.
